Agents of Change: Communities

  • What is your inquiry question now?
  • What technology will you carry with you from TM06 back to your site and share with your director, leadership team, and TCs?
  • What program ideas are you developing that a mini-grant could support at your site?

My inquiry question is:

Is there a relatively predictable way in which teachers come to use technology in their own work?  in their teaching?

One thing I’ve learned this week is how incredibly smart and savvy tech
liaisons are.  I heard at least two people say something about paying
attention to the way in which we organized this experience, making note
of the things that worked really well and the things that seemed to get
in the way of learning.  In our debriefing group on Thursday, I wrote:

Why do I expect people to get it the first time?

That question bubbled up for me when someone in my group talked about
trying tabbed browsing (I think) before but not necessarily
understanding the tremendous usefulness and value of that way of
working.  Now, they’re seeing it as a more valuable tool.  It’s all
about time…I saw that in my SI this year.  Given four weeks, five
days per week, almost six hours a day in a space with a computer lab
and lots of ready, helping hands, even the most novice user created a
weblog and in that weblog has published an e-portfolio.  I’m
re-thinking one of my professional development workshops because of
this – change happens when people have opportunities and time to change
and if that means only five people participate, then so be it.  I’m
trying to worry less about how many participate and worry more about
what happens for those who participate.  We knew this would be hard
work, it would be slow going, and instead of trying to change those
aspects of the work, I need to focus my attention and efforts into
creating an environment in which change can happen (which is one of the
definitions of teaching that I cling to but can no longer remember the
source).
