Old Smokey

On top of Old Smokey sat the old engineer decked out in starched shirt and rail-thin tie smelling of his old aftershave mixed with a hint of coal.  He was the star, no the superstar of this show along side of Smokey.  He was proud, proud to make this trip.

The children sat impatiently upon the hillside drinking grandma’s grape kool-aid shuffling their brand new wooden Smokey’s waiting for Old Smokey to come roaring down the tracks.  All the old ladies sat in their folding plastic chairs and the men stood and talked of the days when steam was king and wildlife was always seen along the dusty rails.

Here it comes!  The smoke and steam smelled sweet to the old railroaders as the engineer waved his soft denim cap and laid on the whistle as he rocked clickity-clack down the old C&O rails.  Good times!
