Please respond to the following questions. For the purpose of our research, it is better to say too much than too little.

1.   At the beginning of the school year how much time do you spend taking a piece of writing through a process to final draft?

Why beginning of the school year? Why not just how long do you spend taking a piece of writing through the process to final draft. I don’t usually start with this type of work, but I think it takes three or four weeks to get from a rough draft to a final piece of work. It really takes time when using in a night class that only meets once a week. I am working at getting assignments back and forth between classroom meetings. It is a pain to only inactive once a week.

2.   What are the different kinds of writing that your students do?

We do journal writing, informal writing, business letter writing, and “oral” writing. I want my students to often write as if they are teaching.

3.   What are the different reasons your students write?

I want my students to write to reflect on their own thinking and learning process. I want them to really stop and look at the process and not just the “math”. Why did you do that? Why is that the right answer? How do you know that? I want my students to write to learn. I want them to have to take the time to look at a whole process and be able to explain in everyday language how to do a certain type of problem. I want them to be able to write not only about a specific problem, but then explain what type of problem it is and is this the process for all of this same type of problem.

4.   Who are the audiences for their writing?

I want my students to be able to write to several audiences. I want them to write informally to colleagues about their problems, I want them to write in a professional style as if to a employer or supervisor, and I want them to be able to write to someone that has less knowledge about a subject and explain how and why they are doing what they are doing.
