Developmental Mathematics Proposal

Statement 1

We must provide a positive learning environment both inside the classroom and outside the classroom for all our students. This includes proper placement using several assessment tools including ACT scores, accuplacer exams, and diagnostic exams created by the faculty. We understand that proper placement is one of the leading factors to increase student success and retention. The learning environment will include classroom instruction, tutoring though the Academic Skills Center and guided computer assistance from full-time faculty. Students will be active participants in their learning and a responsive learning environment will be maintained for each and every student.

Statement 2

We guarantee all students the right to be successful and it is not limited by semester restraints. Students will be provided a study plan and encouraged, guided and mentored through developmental courses by MCTC faculty. Students that attend on a regular basis, use the services provided through the ASC and the Math Computer Lab will be guaranteed the right to continued on a guided pace to successful completion of their courses.

Statement 3

Faculty will maintain high standards and be aware of the diversity of the students and make appropriate accommodations maintaining high standards that will lead to successful completion of college level math courses. Faculty will be aware of student learning styles and provide the opportunity for students to maximize learning through use of varied instruction methods.

Each section of MAT 097, will be created with common syllabus, gateways, and exams. Courses will have three hours or five hours of scheduled instruction time and at least one hour of lab assistance in the math lab per week. The Academic Skills Center will also provide additional tutoring and computer assistance. All part-time and adjuncts will be provided with all the necessary tools and training to provide all students the best opportunity for success.

Students will the opportunity within each class to move at a faster pace and proceed through their developmental math courses at a quicker pace. Student success and retention will be improved by allowing students to possibly move through all their developmental requirements in as a short time as possible.

MCTC math faculty will increase our success rate 5% a year for the next five years.

Tools necessary

A math faculty computer lab with 25 mounted laptops.

Training with Advising Center to set the program up and to maintain the process.

Lab fees to cover the purchase of computer passcode.

Vision

Each student based on ACT or Accuplacer will be placed in the appropriate developmental math course. During the first week each student will go to the ASC get their computer passcode, login to the course and take a diagnostic exam to verify placement and.or provide an individual study plan. The studnet then working with their instructor will work on passing the gateways and exams for the course. Students in MAT 085 that are able to complete the course in a quicker pace will be giveen the oppoortunity to enroll in the next course and finish it during the same semester. Students that struggle and need additional time will be given an incomplete and allowed to continue on during the next semester.

Instructors will teach four three hour devlopmental courses, or equilalent since several also teach 100 level courses, and also be scheduled five hours a week as a mentor in the math lab. The math lab will be staffed by regular full time math faculty at least forty hours a week. Times will be maintained for both day time and part-time night students.
